Iranian war veteran depicted in ‘23 People’ passes away

An Iranian veteran of the Iraq-Iran war whose life is depicted in the movie ‘23 People’ has passed away.

Mohammad Salehi, the veteran with service-connected disability rating of 50 percent, passed away on 20 August 2020 after 4 years of illness.

The war veteran was taken captive by the Iraqi army when he was just 16 years old. Tolerating all the torture and hardships, he was released following over 8 years of captivity.  

He was one of the 23 young soldiers held captive while Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi dictator, couldn’t convince them to say anything against their country as part of a fake show.

Directed by Ahmad Yousefzadeh, '23 People' (The 23) is a war drama depicting the true story of a group of Iranian teenage volunteer troops who fell captive to enemy soldiers in the early 1980s during the war between the US-backed Saddam Hussein regime and Iran.
